Baby Expo Brighton = Pushchair Snarl-Up

Had been looking forward to today’s Baby Expo for a few weeks now. Was feeling very jammy as I managed to find a link for free tickets and Hubby was more than willing to attend as it would be an opportunity for him to see the new Brighton ground. However the reality failed to meet up to my expectations.

The Stadium is impressive and I’m sure Brighton supporters are very proud of there (long over due) new home. However as a venue for an event like this, I think the organisers need to understand their audience a little better. Having arrived early to avoid the crowds, we spent the majority of our time stuck in a pushchair traffic jam. You might say that this is to be expected at such an event and I would agree to a certain extent. In my opinion there wasn’t enough space allocated to visitor traffic the follow-on of which was gridlock every time someone stopped to talk to an exhibitor or look at a product display.

Despite the chaos and bruised ankles it was an opportunity for our boys to shine, both were so very well behaved and happy it was a joy to behold. Obviously it could have so easily gone the other way, neither of them are angels all the time.

Farewell Summer, hope to see you again soon xxx

In days gone by I would make the most of saying good-bye to the British summer. An extra hour was to be enjoyed down the local nightclub, followed by long lie in the next day to recover. That all seems like such a long time ago.
Now I dread it – trying to absorb an extra hour can be hard, but keeping the kids entertained at the end of a long day, now that the night are drawing in and its cold and damp is going to be a mission.
Cbeebies, Fireman Sam, Play-Doh and Jigsaws, Rough & Tumble with Daddy are keeping Jack entertained at the moment. Toby’s happy watching his big brother whilst playing with his toys. But I don’t think this will be enough, especially if we have lots of wet weekends.

So it’s time to get creative, but on a minimal budget and in a small house where space is limited it’s going to require some innovative thinking first.

Breast-feeding etiquette

To my darling baby boy, I know you are too young to understand but, there are a few things I wish to go through with you regarding your conduct over the last few months.
If you could agree to try and address the following it would be greatly appreciated …

1)     Could you be a little more patient when you are due a feed and not try to latch on to my arm, neck or anything else that happens to be in your reach.
2)     Stop thrashing your head about whilst latched on as this hurts Mummy.
3)     Don’t latching on eagerly, taking down a couple of gulps and then stop suddenly and wonder why you have a jet of milk in your eye.
4)     Please refrain from throwing yourself backwards to look at what is going on behind you and exposing me to the world. This is especially naughty when we are out and about and has resorted to Mummy having to take drastic action and feed you in the ladies loos, as you are too nosey.
5)     Leaving snot trails on Mummy’s boobs is not pleasant.
6)     Try not to use your new teeth to either graze or bite Mummy.
7)     Also falling asleep whilst feeding, using mummy as a soother and then protesting whilst being released are also unwelcome habits you have picked up.

Thanks
Mummy

A Week Of 1st’s

Sunday: Lunch out with family and friends – first time out with our two boys. No problems apart from the usual, nowhere really comfortable to feed Toby, but we managed. Jack was so well behaved and ate his meal so nicely, to the disappointment of all the adults sat round him who were eying –up his roast chicken (inc me).

Monday: Mum & I planned to take the boys swimming, Jack hadn’t been for ages and it would be Toby’s first time. This proved to be more of a challenge than anticipated. Decided to go late morning, so we could go to the park in the afternoon. Got to the pool, only to find the small pool closed for cleaning, due to a child having a “little accident”.  Jack was obviously disappointed, but dealt with very well – as we promised to come back later. Thankfully there was a park and boating lake behind the leisure centre. We didn’t know that this existed, so took the opportunity to use up our parking ticket time and do some exploring. Jack delighted in telling us over and over that a girl had done a poo in the pool and that it was disgusting.
One our second attempt we were disgusted to find the small pool closed again – for training or something, we were told that this was detailed on their website, but we had checked this before leaving. By this time I was not a happy bunny and starting to get a little cross. Quickly I racked my brain for a doable alternative.
Third time lucky! Toby grinned and kicked with excitement and even survived a dunking out without crying. Jack soon regained his confidence, got told off for running and even jumped in of the side. The challenge on the drive home was to keep Jack awake, which we did by sinning (badly).
Later that evening got a text from my Mum – complementary family pass was waiting at the pool for us, She’d phoned up to complain & the manager agreed that the website was badly designed.

Monday night – Toby’s first night in the swing crib (on loan to tide us over the next few weeks, due to out growing his mosses basket). Not a fan – took forever to settle and the same after each feed. Situation has now improved after a couple of nights and he even appears to like it.

Tuesday: Toby had his third set of injections. He is so good only cried for a couple of seconds and even gave the nurse a smile on the way out. Managed to see the health visitor whilst at the surgery (very handy). Toby peed everywhere whilst being weighted, another first (and last hopefully). Surprisingly when looking back at Jack’s growth chart, there is only an ounce difference between them. So no difference so far between bottle and breast.

Thursday: Met my nephew and the boy’s met their auntie, uncle and cousin for the first time. Smiles all-round – should be a good couple of weeks!

Friday: Toby and cousin Alex both have cut their first tooth, could explain why both of then had a bad night – what a coincidence.

Saturday: Painted my toe nails for the first time in years, really lovely Cadbury chocolate purple. Totally forgot about it, then when changing Toby, found Jack staring at my feet. He was fascinated by the "mauve paint" as he called it and kept toughing my toes to see if it would come off. Not sure how I managed to get the nappy on Toby whilst having my very ticklish toes played with.

Thundercats, Are Back!

ThunderCats, one of my favourites from the 80’s is coming back with a Brand New Series starting Saturday 10th September at 11am on Cartoon Network. Just hope they haven’t messed about with it too much.

I’m looking forward to watching it with Jack (fingers crossed he likes it) just like my Dad would sit and watch Danger Mouse with my sister and me, not because he had to but because he enjoyed it too.

Weaning Update

Suddenly had that awful feeling – are we doing the right thing, is this too early to be weaning. All the advice seems to suggest six months is the ideal age, but lots of the first stage baby foods have from four months.  Talk about confusing. So I went back to one of my preferred parenting advice resources Bounty. Here they also advise that six months is best but also have a checklist:
Is your baby ready?
  • Doesn't seem satisfied with the usual amount of milk & starts to demand more feeds
  • Appears to be more restless and starts to wake in the night
  • Shows and interest in your food
As we could answer yes to all three, it seemed pretty conclusive to us he was ready.
So weaning is continuing but at a very slow pace, sticking to the one portion of baby rice (after reading the advice given by the Paediatric dietician about the risk of Coeliac disease if Gluten is introduced into you baby’s diet before six months) whist everyone else in having dinner. This has improved the night feed situation - still waking at least twice for feeds, which is manageable.

Toby is enjoying it too!
